Due to the phenomenon called planned obsolescence, people frequently changing devices for a newer model has become a common practice. But what happens to the old devices they are replacing is an interesting topic that has caught the interest of the research firm, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), and came with a riveting result.
In a report titled “Old iPhones are in Pretty Decent Shape,” CIRP laid out its findings as to the state of the display and battery when iPhone and Android were relinquished by their previous owners.
Based on the responses of consumers themselves, some interesting details came to light.

In terms of the quality of the screen:
- 61 percent of iPhones were in perfect condition when sold, traded, or given away;
- 60 percent of Android devices were in flawless condition when sold, traded, or given away;
- 21 percent of iPhone and Android users respectively had their devices’ screens scratched but are usable;
- 13 percent of iPhone and Android users respectively had their devices’ screens cracked but are usable;
- 6 percent of iPhone and Android users respectively had their devices’ screens cracked but were no longer usable;

In terms of the quality of the battery:
- 27 percent of iPhone owners claimed the battery of their devices lasted a day or longer without requiring some charging, while 25 percent of Android users claimed the same thing;
- 33 percent of iPhone owners said the battery of their devices lasted for most of the day without charging, which was also a claim by 42 percent of Android owners;
- 25 percent of both previous iPhone and Android owners claimed that their respective devices’ batteries lasted for half a day without charging;
- 15 percent of iPhone owners said that their devices’ batteries required charging every couple of hours, while the same is true for 7 percent of Android users.
