The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said last Tuesday that they are thinking of training around 500,000 Filipinos to become cybersecurity workers and have them deployed abroad as the global demand increases.
DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy said that, apart from developing “smart cities”, they want to upskill young Filipinos “in order to answer the needs of our employers.”

The DICT said that the cybersecurity sector has around 3 million job opportunities, hence the agencies are planning to train Filipinos to fill at least 500,000 of those seats.
“And all of these countries are looking at sourcing those talents and Philippines is one of the first areas that they look at dahil magagaling daw tayong mga hackers,” the DICT secretary said.
He added that the “sky is the limit” considering the job vacancies in a lot of foreign countries. To further lure employers, Uy said that the country “need to build up the interest and necessary talent.”
Uy highlighted that there are only 200 Filipinos that are certified cybersecurity experts and 70 percent of them are working abroad.
The government aims to offer scholarships and will also team up with private entities to boost the interest of Filipinos in the said field.
