For the first time, the Philippines is finally getting its fuel cell research and development as well as testing center, as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) made way for its opening last July 6, 2023.
Situated within the same compound as the DOST, the infrastructure was built for the research and development of fuel cell technology, with an interest in the development of materials and innovation on particular cell components.
With the technology currently identified with its constraint, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. claims that the facility could also be utilized for performance and durability testing, hoping to improve upon or address the known flaws of fuel cells.
DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) Director Anabelle Briones, meanwhile, said that the facility is open to the public, stating that anyone can have a “lab tour,” but upon request to her office beforehand, via an interview with the Philippine News Agency.
Apart from the tour, Briones also stated that testing services are also free of charge.
Undertaking an R&D at the center would require a signing of the memorandum of understanding with the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) as well as the provision of counterpart funding before accommodation, she added.
Arising from the collaboration between two Philippine government agencies, DOST in addition to the Department of Energy (DOE) pitched in Php13.9 million and Php38 million of funding, accordingly.
In addition, DOE is said to be critical in the dissemination of information and education as well as communication for the design and demonstration of the cell prototype.
