Windows 11 Screen Tint: Enable the Preview Eye-Comfort Feature (Plus Alternatives)

What Windows 11 Screen Tint does

Windows 11 includes an accessibility-focused `Screen tint` feature that applies a subtle color overlay across the display. The goal is to improve on-screen comfort by adjusting color temperature and perceived glare, especially during long reading sessions or when bright colors contribute to eye discomfort.

In preview/Insider builds, Screen tint offers more control than the older Night light option. It includes multiple preset tints, a custom tint color option, and an intensity slider.

How to turn on Screen tint (when the feature is available)

If the feature appears in the system settings, the setup is straightforward:

  • Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Accessibility.
  • Select Screen tint.

Once inside the Screen tint page, enable the feature and adjust it to match comfort needs.

Choose a tint: presets and custom color

Screen tint provides six preset tints plus the ability to choose a custom color:

  • Calm amber โ€“ designed for long screen sessions
  • Rose tint โ€“ targeted toward migraine relief comfort
  • Soft yellow โ€“ aimed at reducing reading discomfort
  • Cool blue โ€“ helpful for users sensitive to glare
  • Gentle green โ€“ intended for light sensitivity (photophobia)
  • Natural grey โ€“ meant to reduce fatigue from stark contrast
  • Custom color โ€“ pick a specific tint if the presets do not fit

Adjust intensity to avoid over-tinting

Screen tint includes an intensity slider. Higher intensity increases the strength of the overlay. Lower intensity keeps color changes subtle while still offering comfort benefits.

A practical approach is to set intensity to a moderate level first, then adjust in small steps until text and images remain readable and colors do not become distracting.

Screen tint vs Color Filters: which one should be used

Screen tint and Windows Color Filters may conflict. In many cases, enabling one can disable the other, requiring a choice depending on what is most helpful.

Guidance for selection:

  • Choose Screen tint when the goal is a general color overlay for comfort.
  • Choose Color Filters when specific visual transformations (such as grayscale or color inversion) are needed.

Tip: If Screen tint does not appear active or changes unexpectedly, check whether Color Filters are currently enabled.

If Screen tint is missing, use these available alternatives

Not all Windows 11 systems include the new Screen tint option yet. When it is not present, these built-in accessibility features can help:

Night light (blue light reduction)

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to System > Display > Night light.
  • Enable it and set scheduling (sunset to sunrise or custom times).
  • For quick control, use Windows key + A to open Action Center.

Color Filters (accessibility color transformations)

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to Accessibility > Color Filters.
  • Try options such as:
    • Grayscale
    • Inverted
    • Red-green
    • Blue-yellow
  • Use the shortcut Windows key + Ctrl + C for toggling.

Making the most of Screen tint once enabled

For best results, Screen tint adjustments should be evaluated in the same scenarios where discomfort occurs, such as browsing for extended periods, reading documents, or working with high-brightness windows. If comfort improves but colors become too muted, reducing intensity often provides a better balance.

When Screen tint is unavailable, pairing Night light scheduling with Color Filters (while avoiding conflicting settings) can still create a more comfortable viewing environment.
